A few days in Mid Western Qld or 'the western downs'

Late November 2019

Recently a girlfriend and I drove out to the Western Downs areas of Kingaroy, Dalby and Chinchilla.  They are the places inland whereby you would normally pass through on the way to someplace else. Rarely would they be destinations in themselves unless you knew people living there.  In this instance, Alana had a girlfriend in Kingaroy which she hadn't seen for a while so she accompanied me for that part of the road journey. She's also a good passenger and company and keeps the driver alert.

However my main reason for venturing out west was to see the countryside and  also to physically see the area where Dave worked and had been for all year. I knew it wouldn't be anything fancy as the place had been in drought as many places of inland Australia has experienced but it's always good to see places first hand.

Countryside is pretty dry!

According to Kingaroy locals, they have not had rain for 2 years ….

Somewhere in between Kingaroy and Dalby is a wind farm that seemingly just appears on the horizon as you drive along.  Area didn't even appear to be windy but apparently that's not the case

The hideous prickly pear is still around!

This may look like any old crop but it's very specialised in that the sap or leaf is used as an anaesthetic for eye surgery. Obviously the conditions  are optimal in the area for this type of plant.  Soil looks pretty fertile too.

A  little village along the way is an amazing little coffee place.  The building has been a school house, a church and a hall and is full of all sorts of historical knick knacks.  An interesting spot for a stopover.

Destination, Dalby

The town seems to have all the services and conveniences for young families and had a vibrant and bustling atmosphere.

It was a good long weekend, new faces and places - Janet was a fabulous hostess in Kingaroy and good to see Dave in his work patch.  It probably was not very restful for him as he did his usual excellent tour guide job around the area.  I undoubtedly would have missed all the well heads as they were on back roads and deliberately concealed from the public.  Also the lake outside of Dalby called Broadwater - it's huge and dry as a bone.

Anyway thanks old mate, Alana.
