Holiday ... Durnstein and Melk, Austria

Fifth day of sailing and we entered the picturesque countryside of Austria.   Upon docking we had a walking tour of a small town (population less than 1000) of Durnstein - lots of lovely scenery, traditional architecture and places of historic interest.  Durnstein is dominated by the ruins of the castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned.

Overlooking the River Danube from the Castle ruins

May 1 making it May Day ... erecting a Maypole in town ... workers drank a lot of beer getting the pole up!

Cruising through the Wachau Valley ... just another castle

Whilst the MS Amabella sailed from Durnstein to Melk, a guided bicycle tour of some 20 passengers cycled along the banks of the Danube.   Dave was amongst the cycling bunch and apparently they stopped at a couple of taverns along the way.  It was our hottest day of the tour - 30 degrees so thirsty weather.

The next attraction ...
Melk Abbey  is a masterpiece of the typically Austrian period of art - the Baroque.  In particular it houses a magnificent organ and bibliothek (library)

the most beautiful library I've ever seen
