Stanage Bay fishing trips - May and September 2012

Fishing mates, the two Daves - Reader and Peters set off to discover the fishing grounds of Stanage Bay for a week in May and a week in September.  Essentially it was Reader's idea, his boat, he did the research, he was the skipper and Dave is the best deckie around.

With great expectations they headed for the Capricorn coast and travelled 175 km north of Rockhampton - a very long drive from Howard and Gympie. The Stanage Bay road is a right turn off the Bruce Highway and a 100 km drive along a mostly unsealed road.

During May and September weather conditions were supposed to be conducive to getting out on the water and catching some good reef fish.  However Mother Nature had different ideas and managed to blow almost the entire time in May and spoiled a lot of fishing time.

On the first trip to the bay, Goose a fellow fisherman from Darwin was part of the fishing group.

The most recent trip, some of the catch ....

Fish results were definitely far better the second time around and we all have a good amount in the freezers.  Dave smoked some of the large fish heads when he returned home which was a far nicer way to eat fish heads than in soup.

Anyway the fellas are encouraged by their latest experience, reckon they know more of the area and more familiar of the local weather conditions, getting to know some of the locals and can't wait to go back again.
